Folate Blood Test in Enfield | Private Folic Acid Check
Folate Blood Test in Enfield
Maybe you are planning a baby and want your numbers in order first. Maybe you are simply exhausted and someone mentioned folate. Perhaps you are already checking your B12 and want the full picture, or you eat a vegetarian diet and would rather know than guess. Either way, a folate blood test in Enfield gives you a clear answer the same day, without waiting weeks for a GP appointment. At Shamis Health & Beauty on Hertford Road, you give a small blood sample, get your result in around 15 minutes, and leave knowing where you stand. This page explains what folate does, why it is usually tested alongside B12 and iron, and what happens after your result.
Collect Blood → 15 mins results → Get Treatment. One sample, one number, and a plan if you need one.
Prices and everything included are on our private folate blood test page. The visit itself is quick: a chat, a small sample from your arm, and your result while you wait.

Folate vs folic acid — the same conversation in two words
Folate and folic acid get used as if they mean the same thing, and in everyday conversation they nearly do. Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9, found in foods like spinach, broccoli, chickpeas and fortified breakfast cereals. Folic acid is the man-made version used in supplements and food fortification. Your body puts both to work on the same jobs.
Those jobs matter. Folate helps your body make healthy red blood cells and supports nerve health, and it plays a key role in the earliest weeks of pregnancy. The blood test measures the amount of folate in your blood, reported as a level you can read at a glance. Low levels are far better caught early — before they have the chance to develop into folate deficiency anaemia. The NHS page on vitamin B12 or folate deficiency anaemia covers the symptoms, causes and treatment of that condition in detail.
Why this test sits next to B12 and iron
Here is the practical problem with folate: low folate, low B12 and low iron can all feel identical from the inside. Same tiredness. Same flatness. Same short fuse. Guessing which one you are short of is how people end up taking the wrong supplement for six months.
So we rarely see a folate test booked alone. Most clients pair it with a B12 blood test and an iron blood test in the same visit. One trip instead of three, and a set of results that actually explains itself. If you want to see everything we test, our full blood testing menu lists the lot.
Planning a pregnancy or just exhausted?
Folate matters most in the weeks before conception and the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, which is why so many women book this test while they are still in the planning stage. We see it most often in the months before someone starts trying, when there is plenty of time to act on whatever the number says. It is a sensible thing to check.
Two things to be clear about, though. First, we do not advise on pregnancy supplement doses — that conversation belongs with your GP or midwife, who know your history. Second, this test is information, not antenatal care. What it gives you is your folate level in black and white, ready to take into those conversations.
If you are further along the planning road, you might also want to look at our pregnancy blood test or our wider female health blood tests. And if pregnancy is not the reason you are here — if you are simply shattered and want to know why — folate is still a worthwhile piece of the puzzle, especially alongside B12 and iron.
What happens at the appointment
You will find us at 530 Hertford Road, Enfield, easy to reach from Enfield Highway, Ponders End, Edmonton, Brimsdown, Southbury and the rest of North London. We are open Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm, and Saturday to Sunday, 1pm to 6pm. You can book online or call to arrange a time.
The visit runs like this. A member of the team talks you through the test and answers your questions. A small sample is taken from your arm — a few seconds, and most people barely notice it. Your result is ready in around 15 minutes, explained in plain English. There is no fasting to worry about for a standard folate test; if you are combining it with other tests, mention it when you book and we will confirm anything you need to know.
After your result
Your report shows your folate level next to a reference range, so you can see where you sit. If your level is comfortably in range, that is one more thing ruled out and one less thing to wonder about. If it is low, you have options.
A consultation is the natural next step: what to eat more of, whether a supplement makes sense, and whether anything else on your report deserves attention. Diet does a lot of the heavy lifting with folate — leafy greens, beans, fortified cereals — and we can talk through that properly. If a B12 shortfall shows up alongside, the team can also discuss our IM shots: always after pre-treatment screening, given by trained staff, using sterile solutions mixed in the clinic, and only if suitable. And if anything needs a doctor’s eye, we will say so plainly and suggest you take your results to your GP.
FAQs
Is folate the same as folic acid?
Nearly. Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9, found in foods like spinach, broccoli, beans and fortified cereals. Folic acid is the synthetic version used in supplements and fortified foods. Your body uses both for the same jobs, and a blood test checks your overall folate status whichever form you have been taking in.
Should I take a supplement before or after the test?
If you already take folic acid, keep taking it and tell the team what you take — your result then reflects your real, supplemented level. If you have not started one and you are planning a pregnancy, do not wait for us. Speak to your GP or midwife about the right supplement, because that advice is their territory.
Can I combine this with a B12 and iron test?
Yes — it is one of the most common bundles we do. Low folate, low B12 and low iron can all cause the same tired, run-down feeling, so testing them together in one visit saves a second trip and gives you a much clearer picture of what is going on. Ask about bundling when you book.
Do I need to fast before a folate test?
No. You can eat and drink normally before a standard folate blood test. If you are combining folate with other tests during the same visit, mention it when you book and the team will confirm whether anything different applies. Otherwise, just come as you are — the appointment itself usually takes under half an hour.
